Aloha Kakou,
I’m going to diverge from the normally serious stuff I write about, and pass along some giggles. Those of us who are “of a certain age” probably remember the word game Mad Libs (see explanation below if you don’t remember Mad Libs). So, how does this old word game relate to the “texting generation”? Well, it seems that some of the texting devices come with software that tries to auto-correct what you type in. If you’re not paying attention to what auto-correct has done for (to?) you, you end up sending text messages that are not what you really intended. While this is not quite the same as filling in the blanks as in Mad Libs, the end result is the same – something that’s nonsensical and very funny.
Take a look at this NetworkWorld article titled “The Best of ‘Damn You, Autocorrect’“.
For those of you who don’t remember, Mad Libs was a great party game consisting of a book of one-page stories. Each story would have blanks in place of some of the words, and below each blank would be a description of the type of word – e.g. “noun”, “verb”, “body part”, etc. The moderator would go around the room requesting the type of words, but not telling anyone the actual story. Once all the blanks were replaced with the suggested words from the group, the moderator would read the complete story. The result was usually nonsensical, and very funny. (This Wikipedia article has a lot of links.)
